Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins provides over a million square feet of office and state-of-the-art facilities including chemistry and biology labs and GMP and NMR facilities.

At the IBBS in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, we work at the boundaries of current knowledge in biology, laying the foundations of future advances in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Any type of research is possible in the IBBS -- in addition to our nine departments, we have several interdisciplinary research programs as well as translational and collaborative research across all basic and clinical departments.

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine’s Brain Science Institute (BSi) brings together both basic and clinical neuroscientists from across the Johns Hopkins campuses. The BSi represents one of the largest and most diverse groups in the University.

The Center for Epigenetics has brought together investigators in genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, biostatistics, epidemiology, and clinical medicine to develop new technologies to apply to both basic science and population-based epigenetic studies. The center has developed several new genomics, biostatistical, and biochemical methods and is applying them to cutting-edge studies of epigenetic mechanisms and disease research.

Since 2009, the Johns Hopkins Drug Discovery program has provided the Johns Hopkins community with core expertise in drug discovery research including medicinal chemistry, screening assay development, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, and animal pharmacology/toxicology. The Johns Hopkins Drug Discovery Program, located in Baltimore, MD, works with the researchers across Johns Hopkins to research and develop tomorrow’s therapeutics for a wide range of human disorders.

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures

The JHU Center for Polycystic Kidney Disease is comprised of a group of world renowned and NIH-funded research laboratories with both physician and basic scientists. Center members are using an interdisciplinary, state-of-the-art approach to understand the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying various forms of human polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

PKD consists of a diverse group of hereditary disorders affecting approximately 600,000 persons in the United States alone. It is one of the most common inherited diseases in humans and the fourth leading cause of end stage kidney disease worldwide. The disorder results in the formation of fluid-filled renal cysts rendering the destruction of normal renal structure and function. There are currently no cures for the disease. The center’s efforts are directed at developing curative therapies for PKD through an understanding of basic renal biology in health and disease.

The Division of Infectious Diseases has laboratories focused on understanding the pathogenesis and transmission of infections of global significance.

The Viral Hepatitis Center combines the work of 5 NIH-funded Principal Investigators focused on translating clinical observation to basic principles. Starting from well-characterized cohorts of volunteers who have hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus infection, we investigate clinical phenotypes, epidemiologic variables, human and viral genomic variation, cellular and humoral adaptive immunity, and innate immunity. There is a special interest in the impact of HIV on these infections. The goal of this team is to develop better methods to prevent and treat chronic viral hepatitis, and synthesize our findings to understand the basic mechanisms governing human immune responses to acute and chronic viral infections.
